I guess you just aren't that familiar with racism. There's nothing in that show that says that every beastman that exists is in that city, there are multiple countries, and multiple refugee areas. The intro of the show has Michiru being hunted down. Her parents knew that she transformed, but she had to hide herself, not because everyone hated her, but because enough violent nutzos did.

Even this week there was a black man killed months ago for looking into a construction building on a jog, and an ex cop and a guy hunted him down, shot him, filed a false police report, and it took 3 months to lock him up.

There was even that segment of the show where they were around people who liked them, but didn't understand her and ended up abusing her in ways that they didn't understand and you almost couldn't tell if they were wanting to hurt her or just accidentally did with the way the story telling was being done, it was kinda halfway in the middle. So really there's a lack of understanding and communication, and it gets driven by fear because the humans that are appreciative get over excited, and the ones who are hateful get over zealous.

So even in the best circumstances you aren't exactly safe. I mean just look at how many people are scared of Chinese Restaurants due to Covid19 as well as the treatments of Middle Eastern and Muslim civilians after 9/11. It doesn't take much for people to go from normally accepted in society, to marginalized. George Bush got a LOT of the Muslim vote but the conservatives ran all the Muslims out of the party, and now they are doing the same with LatinX community and soon Asians.

When you have nothing of value to offer, it's incredibly easy to point at someone slightly different and go "Look at their failings THEY are the cause for our problems" so it'd be very easy to blame meat shortages on animal hybrids or blame the vegetarian ones for any crop shortages. It's not really at all unbelievable. We have kids in cages, we have you know Palestine, an open air prison. This is par for the course.
