Why is Gilda the only gryphon at flight school? Is she an exchange student? It just seems weird that there are no other non-pegasi around.

My understanding is Gryphons are rare, like dragons, and the majority of them don't go to schools. Since pegasus ponies seem to have the only established flight school, I guess it was natural for her to go there if she decided to attend school, which I am guessing what she did then.

Not really any official history on Gilda, but there is plenty of fan fic.

From what I gather, they are just from another country. Another Gryphon was show in the MMMMystery episode, who had a mustache and was basically french.
