So what is it a flag of?

it's the trans* flag. Just like how gays have a flag, the trans* community has one too.

trans* being an umbrella term for transgender, transsexual, transvestite, genderqueer, gender fluid, and gender questioning.

Why do they need a flag?

Why do the Gays need one? Generally a gay flag is used to show pride in being gay, or to protest in favor of gay rights, correct? Well, the trans* community is also fighting for the right to be who we are, and we're proud of who we are too. That's why we need a flag.

  • I have a question (and I do not mean it to sound like a flame because I have many transgender friends) But what is there to take pride in? For my friends they do not call them selves "trans" or any other variation of the word, they are male or female. They take no pleasure in their biological body, and it torments them day and night that the only way they can even get close to what the world says is "normal" is through pills and surgeries. In a world that says you are what is in your pants, why would you want to let everyone know life dealt you a bad hand? Again, this is NOT a flame, I am honestly seeking knowledge so that I may better understand the mindset.

  • Perhaps for those do not pass well or are pre-transition... they may face discrimination or be victims of hate crimes. Sometimes there is no hiding it (from legal forms like passport, drivers license the designate sex), or they haven't had any voice training, etc which can lead to problems from narrow minded people. These flags can be used to promote awareness and trans rights.
It's difficult for someone who is not trans to understand the mindset, but this does expand some knowledge on the matter.
And yes, I know my name is Trannyfur, but it's only because it doesn't really cause me great distress to be born in the wrong body, I've accepted myself. And if ya can't laugh at yourself, who can ya laugh at?

Someone's trying to force you to not be who you want to be? Or what?

As a trans individual living in the state of Missouri, I can be evicted from my home, kicked off a city bus, fired from my job, and banned from stores and restaurants simply for being transgender. Now, the same holds true for the gay community in Missouri, however, the state senate is working to change that for the gay community. The representatives of the state are willing to pass a couple of laws in regards to the human rights of the gay community, but last year they removed trans* from the documents.

I don't let anyone know personally, but I take pride in the fact that I don't get shot on sight like many people would have in my situation a hundred years , or even just twenty years ago. I'm pre-op and pre-hormones, so it's a bit tough for me to pass. I was bullied my entire childhood for being different, and I was often very lonely. I can say that I know what it's like to grow up without a support system, but then I found out there were others out there like me, and I started going to trans* meetings and got a support group and friends through them. That is why I take pride. Not because I'm necessarily proud of my situation, but because it's gotten better than it used to be. I don't expect people to understand what I'm going through, but I do expect them to respect me as an individual.

TrannyFur says a lot of the same thing, as well as bringing up some other rather good points, such as gender markers on IDs and legal names being a constant problem, as well as having to worry about your voice being too high or too low, having to bind breasts or tape back exceptionally large packages, make or wear a pre-made package or fake breasts.

What laws exist that makes this happen? Can you point me to any of them?

    - You're not allowed to be proud of, say, being white. Because: "you can only be proud of things you've achieved".
    - But: if you're a member of an oppressed minority, you're allowed to be proud of that. Even if you were born a member of that group, and thus haven't achieved anything.

    Nice.

  • Monfang, holy fuck... Are you mentally retarded? Think for one stupid second, oil the gears in your head and think.

Why would anyone CHOOSE to be gay? the vast majority of the world hates gay people, in some places kills them on sight. So who in their right mind would wake up one day and say "Fuck it, I like my own gender now." NO ONE DOES THIS. In the same way you can't choose how long tall you are, you can't choose who you love.

Now as for being transgender, can you imagine the horror of being trapped in the wrong body, forever? This isn't something you decide on a whim, it is a horrible experience and my transgender friends wouldn't wish it on their worst enemy. They do not get surgery just for shits and giggles, they do it because it is the ONLY WAY for the world to recognize them the way they wish.

And your last point makes me want to bash my face into a wall. On paper? NO, OF COURSE NOT! Who is stupid enough to write on paper they fired someone for being gay/lesbian/transgender when they KNOW the next day activists would be crawling all over their store. In my state you can be fired for anything, it's a "right to work" state. If some one up top doesn't like you, they just wait for you to make a small infraction, and boom, you're fired. You and everyone you work with know it was because you were gay or what ever, they all saw how the manager treated you and the comments he made about you, but the papers say "late to work" and that's all that matters to the government.

Now please, pull your head out of your ass, your brain needs more oxygen

No, you were never gay, it's that simple.

Fuck if I know; I've been called it three times now, I was hoping you'd know.

I know it's British in origin.

Apparently it means 'jerk' or 'asshole'. Specifically it speaks of someone who masturbates often. Ether it goes back to the Catholic idea that masturbation was a sin or it speaks to the person lack of ability to get tail.

. . .I choose to be gay for a long time. I then choose not to be. It was rather simple.

The idea of being the 'wrong gender' is a mental illness known as Gender Dysphoria. It requires treatment that solves the underlining problem. . .

Gender Dysphoria is usually cause when a person wants to live a lifestyle that goes against the idea that their culture defines as proper for their gender. It manifests as a feeling of being in the 'wrong body'.

The solution to this is not surgery, but counselling that lets them live their lifestyles they enjoy without anything drastic.

To re-iterate lost_cat, you either never were, or are in denial that you are bi or gay.

This is true, any illness requires treatment to re-mediate the underlying symptoms

Dysphoria (literally 'clinically unhappy') usually drags along other mental conditions like anxiety, depression, and in severe cases; suicidal thoughts and/or actions. By their very definitions, clinical conditions are not subjective.

Imagine if you will living in the 18th century and happen to be one of the the small left-handed population. You know you're left-handed because it's the hand you feel most comfortable using, but being left-handed is socially prohibited. You are forced to use your right hand, in this case your 'wrong' hand to do EVERYTHING. Because of this you preform poorly at all manual dexterity demanding jobs. Worse yet, it tends to lead to you being prone to physical injury. You end up becoming depressed with your unintentional poor workmanship and become withdrawn. Then one day you discover that there are other left-handed people forced to be right-handed, You start doing things with your left hand, secretly at home first, and gradually work up to in public when you think no one is looking. You make friends with others who are left-handed and a couple left-tolerant right-handers. Years pass and it's declared in the medical community that being left-handed is perfectly normal and forcing to using the wrong hand can cause long term mental distress. With your new-found knowledge you become your true self and stop pretending to be right-handed any more. The problem is, none of that was ever fiction, people who refused to conform to the right-hand rules were paid less, worked more for the same pay, were seen as sub-human, and sometimes the victims of hate crimes. And this is exactly what every human rights group has in common. The fact that there are intolerant, ignorant, uninformed, and misinformed people trying to constrict their day to day lives.

One more little tidbit for you to chew on; look at the APA's view on 'Conversion Therapy'. Because what you wrote definitely didn't come out of the DSM IV.

    - But: if you're a member of an oppressed minority, you're allowed to be proud of that. Even if you were born a member of that group, and thus haven't achieved anything.

I see that claim all of the time, but it really doesn't make sense.

Nobody chooses being Armenian, Finnish, Irish, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish, or one of any number of ethnicities that are common in the U.S., but it's still completely normal and standard for those people to express pride and general interest in their heritage. Just another part of the U.S. melting pot experience. Hell, as far as those seven groups that I specifically just mentioned go, they usually have "white" or "white-ish" skin tones as well but that doesn't mean that they can't publicly express their own senses of pride.

The reason why me saying "I'm proud that my Finn ancestors did so well in the U.S!" is treated differently than a hypothetical me saying "I'm a white nationalist proudly protecting white people from their enemies!"? Isn't it obvious? It's because the second group, all of those alt-right loons, use those political talking points as a dodge when what they actually want advocate is white supremacy and terrible violence.

Look at how the general public gets pissed off at "antifa" douche-bags waving around communist red stars. And yet they buy clothes at Macy's Department Store (hey, look, a capitalist red star) and drink down bottles of Heineken (ditto). It's almost as if ideas and symbols have different meanings depending on what they're used to promote.

So far in my experience on e621, this is just standard practice with some people it seems. Someone posts trans pride, transphobes comment their transphobia.
