Much of what I'm writing now is an issue in real life. It's a problem I hope to counter in the future of law enforcement.

  • I saw this a lot in the military, primarily with folks in the Army and USMC. Guy I knew in the 82nd absolutely refused to go to medical (or whatever the Army's medical is called, I was Air Force) to get checked out because it could revoke his jump status, even though his was kind of fucked up from a jump mishap and a couple of close encounters with IED's. And this was even as he was in the process of separating from the Army. It's just so ingrained to tough it out that a lot of folks screw themselves out of there due benefits and help. That's just physical ailments, mental stuff was even more thorny.

I hope Jonesy gets some help, but given how shit her department is and the general tone of the story, I doubt it'll happen.

  • The fact Jonesy is debating every little thing about every possible person, and looking for shadows where there might not be any, is getting her stuck between a rock and a hard place.

problem is she's paranoid now because she's realized how few friends she might actually have. life was simpler when she didn't have to ask all these questions RIGHT AFTER nearly being killed. Plus now she's got to worry about something ELSE happening to her at some point into this whole thing because of how many people good ol Strax might have had on payroll.

  • Does Jonesy not trust Marnie? But she saved your life. If she hadn't interfered, you would have been just another point in the statistics for the missing.

That makes perfect sense...except trauma is ruled by emotion. Horrible, ugly emotions. And emotions very rarely "make sense". Part of going through pain like that it wondering why you have all those "irrational" thoughts and even hating yourself for it.
People can't just not feel hurt or afraid just because it doesn't always make sense to feel that way.

I'd love it if things were that simple... But when you're mentally unwell, nothing seems to make sense...
