Maybe he's a spy or something and he is going to pass the object to you as you pass by while continuing to nonchalantly read his book to keep his cover up in case anyone glances in his direction.

I do hope it was a pleasant trip, sometimes I just look at a picture and my brain just has to build a scene, particularly when I've been to busy at work to spend any time writing.
