I...I dont think it is...i've stared at this for a good hour or so and I can assure you, it is not a 3d image...okay well I may be wrong but I am mostly sure, I am sure that the lighting was drawn in, it has a slightly boxy texture that I recognize, I use it when I try to draw curves most of the times.

It's not a big deal. If they actually did that, why would it matter? The end result is great. Using a model would just be an alternative method.
