Alpha particle X-ray spectrometers, as carried on the Curiosity rover, typically use 244Cm as the alpha source. Those alphas scatter off the rock in a precise way, allowing the elemental composition to be determined.
The particular rock here is Rocknest 3, which really was visited by Curiosity.
