i never understood if tanukis do have giant balls or a giant ballsacks

The real life animal doesn't actually have unusually large nuts sadly (that would be kinda hilarious). Instead their depiction of having large nuts comes from the tanuki yokai, though it's actually their scrotum that's unusual, not their nuts. the Yokai have magically stretchy sacks, and are said to have an important role in their ability to shapeshift. Which if you ask me it sounds like a shapeshifted tanuki is using their scrotum as a full body morph suit.

The whole, using their scrotum as a morph suit isn't accurate. They can actually shift their scrotum separately from their body. An example I've heard is a shifting into a shopkeeper, and shifting their scrotum into the shop itself.

that was just my take on it, so i apologize if that wasn't as clear as it could be. The ability to shift their scrotum away from their body is pretty nuts though, i hadn't caught that part. Though now that i think about it i read they could use it as a weapon, so i suppose that could allude to that part. Japan has some pretty outlandish folklore, but that's part of what makes their culture so interesting.
