Every few years there was a supposed right of passage that led someone into adulthood for men, thirteen, eighteen, twenty-one, all of them having a hallmark of freedom and benefits that came with age. In truth for the nerdy fennec who sat alone with his first legal drink in a bar, he saw it quite similar to RPGs. He had leveled up and earned new perks for his class. He could legally drink in a bar and the majority of the world would see him as a proper adult. Although most considered the eye-patch he wore to be some kind of youthful rebellion, a kit trying to be edgy, it was easier than wearing a glass eye that seemed to want to move around of its own accord.
It wasn’t like he was some edgy loner either, he had a few friends that were going to take him to a strip club and a bar for his birthday that weekend, but for the day of he wanted to simply think. He contemplated life and the story that had led him to this moment. He swished the mid-filled glass of pure whiskey that was chilled with a large ice cube while thinking about his autobiography of life. He thought about the earliest birthday he could remember in his youth, he thought about the party he had in second grade where he chased poor Lily Walker with a live worm and tried to put it in her hair. …He also thought about the spanking he got afterwards from his mom.
A small chuckle escaped him and he took his first sip of legal alcohol. The taste of whiskey was strong and it warmed his throat like swallowing a live match but the sensation that followed made his nerve endings tingle with life in a lifeless bar at three in the morning. He breathed out with a deep exhale like he’d been baptized in alcohol and after a moment he stood up. Maybe it was nerves or simply his intolerance to strong liquor but he needed to rinse his face.
When he walked in the restroom he couldn’t have said he expected much, twenty four hour bars were usually run down mini-casinos for the vagrants who regularly paid as much to the bar as they did for rent each month. Even still this seemed seedier than what the hipsters recommended on yelp as a ‘dive bar’. Oh well, he just need to splash his face and he’d be out and back at the bar counter again in the dimly lit atmosphere. That is until he heard the door slam closed behind him.
His eyes looked up and saw a girl facing him from behind in the view of the mirror, he quickly turned around and saw her staring at him with a slight glare. Her arms folded over her chest and he had to wonder if maybe he wandered into the wrong bathroom. “Uh, can I help you?”
