Actually, it's like Spirit Energy. When ones own will/spirit is so great, they can command the respect of those around them, and will often over power them with sheer will power. Its called Conqueror's Haki, or King's Haki and is the only type that can influence people directly.

There's actually more to it than that, as anyone who is weaker (or hasn't fulfilled any other kind of requirement to withstand it) than the user will faint immediately when it happens.
