  • As somebody who saw a friend do this to themselves...all I can say is this is hitting home rather hard.

  • As much as I appreciate the weight of these events. It just seems like misfortune without weight at this point. There are no breaks in between each event.

To be fair real life is pretty much like this.
I once had a friend in HS who cut himself constantly, one day he came out as gay to me, I was very accepting he mentioned he had came out to his catholic parents a few days before, they didn't like it. His cutting got worsened over time and he also start secretly drinking, a few days later when we were hanging out in school he was really cling for attention and I sense something was off, we had a talk and went our separated ways, next day he pretty much told me he was going to kill himself the day prior because nobody likes him. To this day it runs chills to my spine when I think what could have happened if I had brushing off or not pick up on him.

  • I'm not so sure if he tried to kill himself. I think that if suicide was his intention then he wouldn't have asked Sam to come see him.

I think that he only planned on cutting himself...and he went too deep. How horrible.

It happens in real life more than you think.

  • Also, Damon telling Leto he is good literally while he is ignorant to his oldest friend bleeding out is just so completely dissonant.

I'm surprised more people aren't pointing out how strong this scene is. The contrast between what Leto's making Damon say about him is really intense when you think about the fact that Leto is actually behaving really shitty, shittier than he knows, in this scene.

We all make mistakes, and this is one he will probably never forgive himself for πŸ˜“... I can also only wonder what Damon would say if he knew what all was actually going on.

Just because it happens in real life doesn't make it feel real. It's just a case of writing. Usually, when you introduce a problem in a book, you give it a bit of time to flesh out. It's important to give events weight by letting them age a little. Otherwise it just feels like a bunch of arrows rather than a ballista bolt.

I will agree on one thing, I never liked suffering without breaks in any sort of story. I get there's clearly an "unfortunate chain of events" thing that's going down now that we've hit the ultimate downward spiral part of the comic, especially since it's nearing its end. But even chains like this have the barest (keyword; Barest) moment of respite.

The only reason I'm not knocking on the comic for doing it despite that dislike of such a trope(?? ClichΓ©? Eh idk what to call it) is because the artist is known for these sorts of comics, so it's easier to predict excluding comics like Divine Extinction which is still despite everything super light in comparison to this, not to mention this comics' premise was off to a bad (bad in terms of what's going on IN the comic itself, not bad as in the comic itself is) start. As opposed to instances I've seen where writers will start off with the saccharine and get you so deep and then swerve the tone out of the blue for no real reason just to enjoy your suffering when you literally didn't expect it to go that route, and then use "story purposes" as an excuse for the endless sudden torment like the writing's some abusive partner. So thanks to that knowledge, I could already gear myself up to never get too attached to anyone here.
Which is fortunate on my end, as I do not want to get attached to Grim's characters as no offense to the artist at all but I'm just one of those people that tend to do that with characters in stories a lot. The only one I think I can say I'm attached to is Jonesy and that still isn't as much as I could be.

It may not be real to you.

Real life does not play out like a book.

The whole point of this story is to focus on real trauma. It was written based on real scenarios that have happened to Grim and people he's talked to.
I get what you're saying, though. The pacing of the story has gotten a bit hectic...but it isn't completely unreasonable to believe that this kind of bad luck actually tends to happen. It does.

It could even happen to you.

(That was not a threat. I'm not mad or offended.)
