Description
My partner got mad at me for not including a 'what if' at the end, so have it.
There are two possible outcomes for this story.
1. A tornado occurs as Leto hangs himself. This is symbolic of the first time Leto found value in life by participating in activities outside of school, with Damon, doing disaster relief. That first disaster relief was a tornado. Leto still dies, but these last two pages are what could have been. A life he fantasizes about before death. This is the more fucked up ending because it means Damon would find his dead body during disaster response for this city.
2. A tornado occurs as Leto attempts to hang himself. Repeat of the symbolism in scenario 1. However, the tornado hits early enough to fuck up his suicide attempt, and Damon finds him during disaster relief. They get through Leto's issues and Leto's happier and these last two pages are real. I like this scenario better. It's a reminder that there is hope even in the darkest and most fucked up of situations. It'd be a jarring ending for scenario two, though, because I don't show any of the steps taken to recover from Leto's awful situation. But if he can end up OK as in these last two pages, despite all those hurdles, so can someone going through something similar. Don't give up hope. (-;

MemberWhen i first found this story i speed read it because the more i read the more my heart broke. But im kinda glad i convinced myself to come back and read the rest. The what if page was a nice thought and somehow in one way or the other in glad the kids pain is over T_T

MemberI prefer scenario 2 as it means Leto finally got help and thus is given the chance to actually not only improve and abstain himself from the porn and illegal stuff and everything, but also allows him to heal by having that one companion he actually needed to talk to this whole time.
I was hesitant, but I'm honest to god glad Damon stuck around despite everything, if there was one thing I was certain about it's that he was chill.
Leto however had lost a lot of sympathy from me to get to this point, so in terms of how I felt about him as a character itself is very... mixed/iffy. Not to mention, all the open-ends that this comic left. Like Reth, what about her? Did Leto cut contact fully at all? So while I prefer this happier ending (Because I will (with admitted bias) always prefer a happy ending at least if it works for the comic), there is some frustrating stuff still there.

Grim reminders about the darkness in the world are important. We should not turn a blind eye to the depth of pain within the world.
But neither should they be all we experience. For without the good, the reasons we choose to live, we only drive ourselves deeper.
I think your partner had the right idea because it could very much have gone either way. And that honesty is important.
But you also have a good point. And I like that we share taste in stories. Hope in the bleakest blackness. For there IS light if one chooses to look for it.
It reminds me of my own attempt at a similar story. A fanfic within the Sly Cooper universe that focused on substance abuse. Funnily enough it ends in a somewhat similar if different manner. I used the method of attempt to actually transition into how it ends.
These are my favorite kinds of stories. Where we come face to face with the demons both within and without, and emerge stronger even if not truly triumphant.

But in Metamorphosis it was pretty clear that she did actually die. I saw people say that they wish they'd never seen that last page. I know it gave me a shiver when I saw it and realized that the scene with her daughter was just...the figment of a dying person.

Realistic sure, but like mentioned earlier unfortunately frustrating as well, Reth gets to walk away scott free basically. But I suppose that's just how it is in this bitch of a world.
