Japan's already on it. haven't heard much on it recently, but it's a active research in human-animal hybrids is a thing. It might not be where we would like and it's a medical thing right now, but it's a stepping stone.

Watch the genomics space. Curing genetic diseases, and all the others for that matter, represents the same skills needed to add instructions to our DNA to cause changes. So give it a few more decades, but I think we will see physical furries.

Technically, it already IS possible. The only two issue would be A: if carried biologically, to ensure the body doesn't miscarry. And B: making sure the resultant hybrid (because that's what a Furry inevitably will be) own immune system doesn't murder it.
