News: Feb 26, 2025 Show

Feb 26th:A new bill in Arizona is making its way through the Senate that would force sites like e621 to implement mandatory age verification for all users—or face potential lawsuits. This system would require third-party vendors to verify every user’s age through a government database. Not only is this a massive violation of privacy, but it also introduces serious risks, including identity theft through phishing schemes and other malicious methods. Worse still, we would have no control over ensuring that user data is permanently deleted after verification.

Since e621 operates out of Arizona, this law would almost certainly impact us if it passes. If you want to help ensure that we can continue serving you without being forced to collect personal information, we urge you to contact Arizona’s senators and ask them to vote NO on this bill.

Please help spread the word about this issue and encourage others to take action.
Further information on the bill itself can be found at the Free Speech Coalition: https://action.freespeechcoalition.com/bill/arizona-hb-2112/

GIF isn't kind to the colors with this one, those grays are going greenish brown.

Yeah I noticed that as well. Is this common with gifs?

Yes, because you are limited to 256 colors max, because the fileformat is from literal 90's, so you just have to use what colors are available. Also once that data is gone when using GIF, it's gone forever.

Most websites have tried to substitute GIFs with MP4 and WebM video files (includes basically all GIF services like GIPHY, Tenor, Gfycat, etc. and websites like Imgur and Twitter), but you are using lossy format with chroma subsampling which isn't ideal either (GIF was also used as lossless image format online back in the 90's as PNG wasn't a thing). WebP kinda fell on it's face and always has chroma subsampling, AVIF might be viable in future, however now we already have APNG which we can use and is both lossless and has full color support.

You can compare post #2758746 APNG and post #2733798 GIF and look at stuff like the body how there's less color banding (blotches/circles of colors) going on with APNG and everything is proper smooth gradient.
Or post #2196867 APNG and post #2194775 GIF where there's no dithering noise visible on characters anymore, background has more color detail and variety and filesize is also lower with APNG.
