The "Tags" part of the site doesn't let you go beyond 750, so with that I'd say above 75 per page times 750 which is (definitely did this without a calculator) 56250

Don't know how true it is but I would not be shocked if it was even above that, this site's a beast

There are a lot more tags than that.
According to the stats page, e621 currently has 858,478 tags, although a number of them are empty.

The really interesting question is, how many empty tags does it have? What percent?

Well, it has been a month, and the total number of tags went up to 870,981, an increase of 12503.
Based on the database exports, 447,546 tags report having 0 posts.

It's kind of understandable. There are a lot of empty tags that are just typos and mistakes.
... people using hashtags as tags
... someone trying to change tag's category by appending "artist" in various forms to it
... some strange person just counting up to 552 using tags
... people competing for the longest tag name available
... just random nonsense
It's still a very large number of completely pointless tags.
