心霊番組見てたらなんか横で震えて腕にギュッてしだしたオオタチ

ぶるぶる……

I was watching a ghost show when Furret started shaking next to me and gripping my arm

  • I tried translating this and it sent me down a rabbit hole.

おわかりいただけるだろうか (owakari itadakeru darou ka) is a common phrase used on Japanese supernatural TV, usually followed with もう一度ご覧いただこう (mouichido goran itadakou). They basically mean "Did you get it?" and "Let's watch that again..." and they're used before replaying something in slow motion that the viewer might have missed.

A common joke is to change the "owakari" to "okawari" (おかわり) in the first sentence, and the "goran" to "gohan" (ご飯) in the second. Changing the meaning to "May I have seconds?" and "Let's have another bowl of rice..."

I really like how Japanese phrases can be completely changed in meaning with such small changes to the sentence.
