The concept was poisoned for decades (still is, really) by the actual cringelords who make it gross.

People can still do it fine, but there's been such absolutely huge numbers of total cringefest situations that someone has to show some real quality to not be lumped in with the ego-wankery that is the Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu/Reverse-Sue market. Basically, show that you have some small originality, care about the story involved, or just be decent with what you're doing.

I've seen plenty of art, and read plenty of fics with self-inserts/personal OCs that were actually quite good. You usually can't tell it's a self-insert with the good ones unless it's directly said. For the bad ones... well, there's Sonichu. 'Nuff said.
