I feel like anime style characters in particular (like the Pokémon trainers) have this age-ambiguous quality to them where you can feasibly ascribe any age to them between 10 and 30, then handwave it as the art style.

Oh the facial expressions are amazing, they add so much to an already great animation!

I feel like this would happen a lot in the Pokemon world where they would try to prank their trainers forgetting it just not knowing that the humans don't have 'heat' cycles and that we are ready to go always for such pranks to not work on us or work too well ;p

Agreed, I mean hell In most cases any anime or even anime style characters can be anywhere between 1 and infinity when it comes to age regardless how they look.
