I spent 19 years of my life building a Fokker triplane, and it fucking worked.. maybe you could try designing and making a jet? Jets are much more complicated though.

Build an little RC plane that's really nicely controllable and then find a way to code something up for it to circle around you and land by as you want you with cheap LIDAR sensors and PIDs?
