I'm a little ignorant on what Bassel means by deadnames. Anyone able to explain?

I'm in the same boat is you and would like to know, as well. My assumption is that his grandmother still calls him by his old female name, but I don't know if that's what it means for sure.

Excellent deduction. That's exactly what it means. :)

  • Interesting how Amon's and Kyra's Vibrator tails never came up as a thing when they were doing it with each other.

TL;DR when a person transitions and chooses a new name it's considered impolite / rude to refer to them by the name they used to use. In this case the grandmother is still addresses the gift cards to whatever Bassel's name was before they transitioned.

What's odd is I've never heard people use that term myself until just recently, but wouldn't it be moot if Bassel just went and legally changed his name?

Not really, even if it's on your legal certificates you can't account for pigheaded, stubborn denial. Best case, granny is old and has trouble remembering. Worst case, it's a deliberate act of condemnation; a statement that his transition isn't valid and that she refuses to accept it.

As a general rule, the answer to any question fitting the format "Wouldn't [problem] go away if [minority] just [action]?" is no. And even if it was that simple, changing names and gender markers on legal documents is difficult in most places and impossible in some.

Legally changing a name is also highly expensive, and some people can't afford it

The use of the word "considered" before impolite/rude feels, icky... All in all, if someone wants you to call them this, you call them this, if someone wants you to call them that, call them that, if someone doesn't want you to call them the other, DON'T call them the other.

  • Once I realized Bassel is trans, my brain went to thinking he's part whiptail. Whiptails are interesting because they are never born male, and asexually reproduce, (technically they still pretend to sexually reproduce, it's complicated.) Would be an interesting take, Bassel identifying as male in an all female family tree, seems generally accepted for who he is, but there are the parts of his family who just can't wrap the idea around their heads. Plays really well into Bassel understanding Amon's complicated situation a little better.

Yeah, I try to avoid my brother's deadname like the plague, but they named him after a flower, so now when I talk about the actual flower I feel kinda dirty for saying it.

Well, it varies from person to person. Yes it is generally rude, but I've known several people who were trans but still closeted to a lot of extended or even immediate family, so it was actually very rude to NOT deadname them if said family was present, and others who just didn't really care if they were called by their old name, but chose the new one to pass better in public.

It's kind of like how the "c-boy" and "d-girl" slurs aren't even considered offensive by some trans people (at least several of them on here said they personally didn't, when the tags were changed to andromorph and gynomorph), but my brother nearly got into a fist fight with his friend's bully at school when they called her that.
