1: birdo is a species. Her name is birdetta
2: she was the first trans video game character along with vivian. Being trans wasnt widely accepted when super mario bros 2 came out, and it was worded poorly in the manual

reminder that smb2 is literally not even canon. all of its events were in mario's dream.
and birdo has only ever been called "birdo" outside of the smb2 manual. so canonically speaking, she's not even confirmed to be trans and has always been named birdo, and never birdetta.

True, but her preference is also referred to in "Super Smash Bros: Brawl" from 2008, and while SSB isnt really 100% canon either, her description writes that she prefers to be called Birdetta, but they also call her an "it" too :(

Not only that though but i did learn that shes not the best trans icon for video games because shes been presented as an "other", and was intended as a punchline/villan-esque character

HOWEVER!! I'm certainly not saying that Birdo cannot be interpreted as trans, in fact I personally do consider Birdo to be trans. I'm just not a fan of using outdated, mistranslated manual descriptions of characters as trans rep. Especially with the use of "Birdetta" as her name when she was literally only called that in the smb2 english manual which is super old and reminder, mistranslated. plus, my point of smb2 not being canon, although there's not too much of a smb canon anyway.
