Normally the inferior version is either deleted or it's merged with the new submission, with the votes and comments retained.

A post being "new" or "old" isn't considered, merely which has the better quality.

Damn, and I had just made my gushing comment on the deleted one. But you know what, I'll TL;DR what I originally said for most of it because this picture and animation deserves the heavy praise.
