[PMD Manga] Discovery Team #1: Everyone's Adventures and Treasures
This is a derivative manga of the PMD series.

I want you to deliver the "Perfect Apple"!
What will Pikachu and Eevee find in the forest?

- PAGE 2 / 72 -

*Please be noted that Eevee is identified as female despite her tail tip indicating male throughout this manga. This could be an error made by the artist as this manga was in the early development before her tail tip was updated in the future.*

It seems we skipped the entire fight with Togekiss or is this just a dream.

Unless you want to wait several months for the next episode...

Does hakkentai drop whole chapters instead of pages/batches?

They do it by episodes, or else the whole chapter will take about 100+ pages

This is technically the next "chapter." We got the first (previous) page a while back already.

I'm kind of torn. If I were really invested in the story, I'd want to read it in strict chronological/narrative order. But I'm enjoying it more for the art, for the fun moments, and (of course) commentary, so I don't mind parallelizing a bit.

On the other hand, there are others reading this who are more invested, and this approach might muddle up the story for them. My first reaction was like KTS's: "Wait, what? What happened to the big Maractus / Togekiss showdown we were promised??"

And on the gripping hand, it seems like Hakkentai is releasing it to his followers in this non-linear way, so we're not the only ones in that boat. Has there been discussion on why he's taking this approach? It's one thing if this came down to the whims of a publisher, etc. but that's obviously not what's going on here. For an author to do things this way effectively undermines the telling of their own story. So what's going on?

  • I wish this will be the last time I say this... -_-

The Discovery series was first released in a non-chronological order at Pixiv and Twitter, probably because they didn't think about how far they will go with this. In the beginning, they made two mission chapters (what you are reading now) along with Discovery artworks. Later on, they decided that their followers deserve to know the lore of the characters and introduce Togekiss' gang, so they began to work on the main series - the Prologue and Chapter 1 consisting of several episodes. So at the time I'm making this comment, they are working on the next episodes of the first chapter, which will take several months.

These missions chapters were suppose to have no affect on the main storyline as they can happen at any time when Pikachu and Eevee join the Discovery Team as Beginners, but this chapter will give us a hint of when it takes place in a few more pages, just be patient, so I hope you get the idea of how it goes in this flow.

Let me be clear. It's not their fault for confusing you all with how the plot goes because of how these contents were uploaded in e621, late and chronologically, unlike how they did on Pixiv and Twitter, but me. That's why I said in the previous page of this chapter:

    I fucked it up.

    wait... eevee now is male?

Not 'now'. It's 'before'. Eevee's initial design is based on the original version (probably a gender error) until it was updated with the female feature a month later. By lore, she is 'female'.

Um, so this is... a... side story level thing?

Yes. It's just a side story. Like any normal missions you play in any PMD.

What I'm understanding is that Pixiv/Twitter readers first saw a mention of Togekiss and company in this storyline, and then got a long "flashback" that introduced those characters properly (that we already saw here). Which is an odd way to proceed, but lack of planning out the story from the get-go would explain it.

I get the approach of having "mission chapters" that can happen at any time---that's not unlike episodic TV shows, where a bunch of stuff may happen in one episode, but then things end up more or less the same as they started, and past events are hardly ever mentioned. So you can miss a few episodes, or even watch them out of order, and you won't be left confused. But that kind of format severely limits the storytelling. (I recall this was one of the main differences between Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)

My guess is the story jumps around a lot judging by the mission chapters. Eevee's gender hasn't been determined yet. This was probably in the early development stages of the story before the main story was even written.
