neri and raziel (caelum sky) created by alradeck
Description

Comic continues on my site. Thank you guys for the years of fun. : https://caelumsky.thecomicseries.com/comics/233/#content-start

I've tried my hardest to keep this comic as accessible to everyone as I can, but given the response of this page I don't feel comfortable having it on this site anymore. I've put a conditional DNP on things as I don't want everything taken down, but I won't be uploading more pages here. As I can put forever and folks never read, I'm not trying to safeguard every bad actor out there. I'm mostly upset people can be so vitriolic at being told no. It's not your comic.

If you'd like to support the comic, 20 pages+ are up at my patreon. They're eye-strainless. (honestly I just keep the glazed versions for DA and twitter)

  • Am I high or does it look like this page was drawn over graffiti?

Just wondering if that was intentional is all.

I've seen this page posted on another site and that background 'ghost' image over the whole page was not present. Leads me to think it's not intentional and shouldn't be there.

It's been run through Glaze, an process like Captcha that makes it difficult for AI to scrape it.

Oh good we're getting Denuvo for art now too.

I feel like this craps all over e621's purpose of being an archive site :P

I've uploaded the original unmodified version and added the edit tag (among others) to this one. I also set this one as the child, since it's an edit. I debated on editing the pool too, but with this one being up and already interacted with, and mine still waiting for approval, that felt premature and presumptuous.

Honestly, I'm kind of surprised the rules allow for this. Especially considering I'm pretty sure this'd fall under "no AI edits" (assuming I'm reading their paper right) and it's such a petty (for a lack of a nicer term) change considering it'll inevitably be broken with a bit more development in ANNs/LLMs — development that'll happen regardless.

... please don't. This is my comic and I already have a headache dealing with this shit as it stands, I'll make it where every page everywhere is glazed. It just confuses the bots. I don't understand why it's petty to protect my work?

Don't what? E621 is an archive site. We want the biggest, fullest, purest version of every image available, provided it's original. As far as I can tell, this filter is only on e6, so while it's unique, it's certainly not original.

So I went to the source, uploaded the original, and so forth, just like what's happened thousands of times by a great many users. That's all.

Go ahead; it's your art. If you did that, then this version would have already been the original. This has nothing to do with Glaze.

It's not petty to protect your work; in fact, it's very admirable. Glaze itself is petty by nature of what it does and its effectiveness. So is uploading a filtered version of an image to a site whose purpose to have the unfiltered version of images. Those actions are petty in the sense that you're going out of your way to do something that'll be meaningless in the end. This isn't an attack, this is just the truth. Sorry if it came off as rude.

You don't get to decide what I feel is worth it for my body of work. This version was also on DA, but with the next page it'll be everywhere. I'm sorry posting artwork online in the last year has become an absolute shitslog, but I wanted to give you a chance to take things down first before reporting it. It's not the truth to assign what you think is right for my artwork.

It also makes it headache inducing to look at, so this attempt at dealing with bots is now causing actual vision related issues.

  • I think people need to kinda get over the look of it and let the artist protect their art from theft, if you where an artist and your art got stolen by AI art programs, would you be happy about it? No, I don't think so, because you wouldn't even get credited.

Honestly, I think people are just mad that is looks different and at least they are TRYING to protect their work in whatever means they can. Just cuz it makes the picture look a little off doesn't need to provoke such a negative outlook on the comic or artist.

e621 is an art archive site with a focus on uploading the visually best available posts. It's not intended to be a personal gallery. The artist is free to upload future pages with Glaze in the future, as weird as it makes the image look, but the version without Glaze would've been deemed superior had the artist not filed a takedown there.

I only started uploading it here because it was happening already, and figured ya'll would appreciate being on the regular posting circuit. I like this site because the comments tend to be some of the most thoughtful and creative I get across where it's posted, but this page is a trainwreck of "i want it, so fuck you" .

A good point. I'll leave the posting to you all.

I hate doing it. I absolutely hate having to safeguard my shit because people couldn't care less about the artist, and just want things because my time and effort is yours, somehow. That's not fair.

    e621 also respects artists.
There is a reason we do not post highest quality from Patreon.
And yes it is rude to tell the artist that it is meaningless in the end. If the bot scrapers keep changing, she will update. You don’t suppose it’s meaningless to update anti-virus programs because hackers get better, do you?

If the artist desires, they can become a Conditional Do Not Post artist.
Only the creator may be allowed to post. That should help.

To be fair, if all the pages made here on out were glazed then they would be the superior version.

It still gives genuine headaches to look at thanks to the visual noise in the background.

Well, looks like I'm a little bit late to the party.

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience here, but I personally don't see the comments under this post as "I want it, so fuck you".
People here do appreciate artwork, and they do respect artists. They just hate the Glaze effect.
It is not an opinion, but a fact that some people experience dizziness or headaches just by looking at that effect. That includes myself.
I do not think that it's fair to lash out at people here for disliking it.

However, the bigger issue here is that Glaze does not even work. It can easily be bypassed with just a few lines of code.
There are a few extensions and plugins already released that will get rid of adversarial noise without any issues.
As such, applying this effect to your artwork will not protect you from malicious actors harvesting your artwork for their deep learning models.
But it does harm genuine users.

Of course, you are within your rights as the artist to do whatever you wish with your work, and we will respect it.

Out of curiosity, do we upload from FA or from the webcomic home page?
Not sure which to do so.

    The one that's better quality.
    Higher res, less compressed, etc.

As long as it's publicly available, of course.

That last bit there is what really counts. People can bellyache all they want, and discuss what they do and don't like. Open discussion should be open.

But when people are in such discussion they need to vitally remember that rights of speech does not equate rights to demand, or rights to take. This comic is property, owned by its creator and protected by that ownership regardless of where it is put or how it is displayed.

It takes incredible time, effort, planning, and even money to produce this stuff. The artist is already being graceful enough to essentially donate all of that to us by allowing us all to see it for free with an option to maybe give him money if we feel like it. To allow us to consume his intellectual property like this at all should be respected. Copying a paid access version and distributing that yourself (in any way or method) is denying the artist the income he would have made from people willing to pay for that quality because you are allowing them to bypass that restriction. That crosses the line very definitively into theft, and there is no website in the world with an EULA that you can hide behind for that.

If you want to see it without the watermarks, pay for the privilege.

Her. And I can confirm the Patreon version currently doesn't have the watermarking. So in addition to supporting the comic and getting the pages earlier (not to mention being a good deal ahead of this page), you'll also get the highest-quality version as well.

  • Am I the only one who thinks that a comprise could’ve possibly been reached where in every version posted(save for that on patreon and other pay to view platforms) are given the anti theft glaze treatment?

That would’ve made the glazed versions the highest quality version that is (Publicly) available.

  • Well, this is a shame, I was really looking forward to learn what happened next!

Sadly not everyone can afford patron since inflation in many countries is so bad, playing a few bucks for access to a decent content is impossible or at least very expensive... *coughsouthamericacough*

What a great loss... sad to see this comic go :(

This isn't the only place the comic is posted for free, though I will really miss the discussions here as I don't use the other places as much. But the comic's main site is here, and here's the page after this one:

    https://caelumsky.thecomicseries.com/comics/234/#content-start

Patreon pages are ahead of public release, but that's it. The comic isn't paywalled.

Edit: I assume the downvote is from someone assuming 'free" means pirate sites. And that's a NO. Free as in posted by the artist herself on her own accounts.

According to current discussions (topic #43284) in the forums, this might end up being the only way watermarked (including glazing) posts are allowed, going forward. Because of potential abuse, there's probably going to be all kinds of restrictions like artist only posting, etc. There's a bunch mentioned in the topic if anyone's interested.
