I'm guessing knew what he was doing. But when he saw how it made her freak out, he panicked and messed up the reversal.

No no, you can clearly see that in panel two his thumb was "lifting" off of the page. It's clearly indicated that his thumb was covering "gender" which led him to read it as "Reversal Spell" rather than "Gender Reversal Spell".

Art style is a little all over the place, but the expressions are priceless, so I don't care!

I meant throughout the comic. Of course the gender-reversal spell was a folly. I meant that he was aware that he was reading a TRANSFORMATION spell (as the titles are in English). Either it was his plan to change her until he saw how it freaked her out, or he didn't think it would actually work.

he thought it was bogus and laughed at it, telling her "listen to this" this being the transformation spell. he is just stupid.
