It's actually a minor enchantment. It also keeps the blade sharp, and automatically knocks minor dings out of the armor.

Yes and they have nine but this isn't accurate mythology also heracles knew this and the only reason he killed the Hydra is because he burnt the stumps to get new ones from growing it's pretty interesting.
