  • Ah, I love the internet. Even if no one will get the reference a month from now, I'm glad I got to see it while it was still relevant.

  • Honestly with how the CEO dude didn't care about safety and just wanted money I would say it's ironic he would die because of that but it's unfortunate it also took the lives of 4 people who had nothing to do with his stupidity

It was all over the news, but here you go: https://www.cnn.com/americas/live-news/titanic-missing-sub-oceangate-06-22-23

TL;DR The submersible was controlled by a controller that looked like the one in this piece. https://www.tiktok.com/@bbcnews/video/7246665481770339611

I'm going to kinda defend the choice of a standard game controller:

    • It's much easier to obtain spare parts if you use off-the-shelf items, than something like a custom-built controller with 3 analog sticks, 7 buttons, and 2 d-pads
    • Someone else has already done all the design, ergonomics, functionality, cheapening, manufacture, quality assurance process (so you can also buy 10 normal units for the price of 1 custom)
    • The US army does it too, for bomb-/mine-clearing equipment or other devices that can fail without creating an immediate danger to people (Ars technica article) (this also mentions interface familiarity, which is a plus, but kinda irrelevant when the operator is both the designer and the owner)

HOWEVER, as mentioned, that is not equipment for handling people, It's all stuff that someone remote controls for one reason or another where you should not be next to it in operation (for example, some de-mining robots move the mine to a safe area before intentionally setting it off)

    • Example: the remote control to a bomb disposal robot dies, and no spare was brought along: wait an hour for an replacement, and continue operation
      • Even if the bomb has gone off in the meantime, no lives were lost (bomb-belts aren't counted in this case)
    • The remote control to a submarine dies, and no spare was brought along: you are very fucked, unless you can improvise a solution
      • Even if you figure out a solution, you might not have enough time to execute it to survival

Also, why choose an F710 instead of an F310, it's the exact same controller, but wired, so you can't run out of power during operation

EDIT: minor wording error, also added:

    TL;DR:
It's not an bad idea to use things others have built for a different purpose, just make sure that it's completely fit for purpose, and reliable enough

Sadly, this will change from a dark humour joke, to one about pollution
