Turns out it was a .ZIP archive disguised as a .JPG and contained paysite material.

It wasn't a whole lot and it wasn't good enough to feel at a loss for not catching it. Better stuff out there for free, anyway. Granted, taste is subjective.

If you check the flagging history, you can see there have been about a dozen files like it being found out as of recent.

I think people do it to upload non-image files into imageboards as a convenience instead of using a file hosting site. Someone happens upon said archive-image and propagates it without knowing.
