Because abuse is cyclical. Because far too many people think that, because they have suffered, so should others. That its not fair TO THEM that they dont get to hurt their kids. And then you also get people who think that since this is how its been done for x number of years, it must be the right way. Which, yanno, *gestures at all of medicine but especially washing your hands*

if i had to guess... i still have no idea. kid beating just seems to be the snapped to answer to explain the current child delinquency problem, "if we werent so soft on the kids they'd not be tempermental, wanting to listen to pound town, and be apathetic to education." and "Maybe if you'd beat your kids they wouldn't be little shits."

Ultimately taking it too far back the other way won't fix anything.

Being spanked as a child: traumatic, emotionally damaging
Being spanked as an adult: hot

Moral of the story: Don't beat children. Beat adults instead.

I was my parents' first child and they didn't realize how fucked up they made me until I was 8. They couldn't raise their hand to open a cabinet without me flinching like a beaten dog. They both grew up in corporal punishment households and my mom's mom especially would whack her for anything. My mom lost it bawling when she apologized to little kid me. In the unlikely event that I ever have kids I will use literally any other option for discipline. We have all kept our scars.
