  • If I had to guess drawing from what's been said in the comic so far there was some kinda of mass extermination event (a war, a "wolf hunt," etc.) the previous year given what the pickpocket said. The flashback hinted at lycan existence already being common knowledge and with a bloody enough history that even a non-aggressive lycan was immediately met with hostility. Not only that but rather than even considering the possibility of peaceful coexistence when Ren stood up for her the crowd immediately jumped to "you must be a lycan, too." There wasn't even the thought of "you're trying to bridge the gap" or "you're a traitor to humankind," just straight to "the only way you could defend a lycan is if you ARE a lycan."

So my guess on what happened was whenever this mass extermination event took place Ren either publicly spoke out against it and was taken out by another angry mob, or perhaps someone came after Tsukiko directly after hearing rumors of a lycan in the city and Ren sacrificed himself so she (and Rin) could escape.

You might be right, but then again I doubt Tsukiko and Rin would be safe walking outside like that, given their relation with Ren. Or they would be way more cautious, exposing her Lycan form just for a wallet seems very risky.

My guess is that it was just an accident or a sudden disease.

It could be a case of "post-war clarity;" after the slaughter the general public may have realized the Lycans weren't the threat they were lead to believe. Or more likely Tsuki either doesn't have full control of her transformation (sudden burst of adrenaline in that situation may trigger it) or she's just impulsive and transformed without thinking. Could also be a matter of knowing they're in an otherwise secluded area where the only person who would see her transform is a two-bit criminal who's not likely to go around saying "I ran into a lycan while trying to pickpocket a small child." And - being a one-on-one encounter - she might see it as an opportunity to challenge perceptions without the risk of causing a panic.

Ultimately only the author knows, but it's fun to speculate.
