He did grow up. He never got them.

he has green flames, thick scales, and is a frigging master of digging. He's an earth dragon.

We have earth ponies, pegasai, and unicorns. How is the concept of different dragon species lost on everyone?

It's not lost on me but when he runs away to be with his kind, unless I'm mistaken, they all had wings. So my interpretation is that when Twilight Sparkle hatched him with her magic she somehow fundamentally changed him. So now he's really kinda half or a quarter pony; to that extent I would say he has the most in common with Earth Pony's [hard working and fiercely loyal].

which btw I've been thinking for months now. Why was spike given to twilight anyway? It doesn't make sense. Sure she hatched him but why did she need an assistant when she was a child when she hatched him? Spike's presence confuses me.

the reason WHY her test was to hatch a dragon egg, only Lauren knows. However, right after he was hatched, Celestia took him and raised him. Even if he acts like a royal messenger, Celestia is "mommy" to him. When he was old enough and Twilight was far enough along in her studies, she set her up with a job in the canterlot library and assigned spike as her liaison with herself, hence the special scrolls that, when burned by spike's green flames, are sent to Celestia.

There wasn't enough time in season 1 to explain all of this, and Lauren and Hasbro got into arguments during season 2 and Lauren had to leave after just a couple of episodes had aired.

I still long for an episode for Spike to hug Celestia.
