another not-so-fun fact about whales: you can estimate a whale's age by using the layers of earwax buildup in their inner ear. unfortunately, most whales do not have external ear openings, so you can only use this technique on carcasses

Fact that everyone probably know but I just discovered recently: Sperm whale sleep vertically so that they can access air with minimal exertion by positioning blowholes directly at the surface.
