    No, not his own, but as i understand he was a pirate, so he did the same to others.

    As far as i know, it was actualy pretty comon IRL for people that got attacked and captured by pirates to join them, so it's probably what happened to him. His community was raided, and he joined them, hoping he could survive that way.
