Description

ALT: blended-together horse faces looking at viewer with curiosity. One is angled straight on the left, intersected by one angled from top right to the centre. The top left has a head in three-quarter view, and just to the left of its raised snout is a lone eye in shadow. Bottom right has a snoot poking in.

Hay!

Tagged it Disco Elysium because of the reference to Esprit de Corps - the character/skill portrait by Aleksander Rostov.

Disco Elysium features a fragmented protagonist whose psychic/physical functions can be levelled up as skills, but also speak as characters. Esprit de Corps is his cameraderie for other cops (herd mentality.) That original picture gave the impression of being scrutinized by a group I am not a part of (maybe reflecting some of the protagonist’s anxieties, though that would likely not have been intentional and likely to be more my own projection). This discomfort toward cops might have motivated me to reinterpret that scrutinity as plain curiosity, my feeling of alienation as a possibility for acceptance or porousness. Part of the fun was going from front-facing heads to angles at which horses might need to look at you, because they can’t see what’s right in front of their faces. The dorks! The side effect of this is that there is less of a flatness to the piece. The title I gave it is Spirit of the Body. By being so literal with the translation, I felt like I was coming into contact with something more archaic. I hope you can agree that it's not simply creepy, but that's up to you. I like it. And to think I finished this in such a huge rush just before EF - I picked up all the copies I would later sell on the rainy morning of my out-of-breath departure, lol.

Honse,
Theo
