It's much harder to retrain yourself to shoot left handed after potentially using only your right hard for years in fire arm combat.

There's really no reason you can't. You train to shoot a pistol with both eyes open anyways. If you have time to aim properly you also usually adopt a 'weaver' stance, holding the pistol with both hands in front of you. It's not a huge stretch to tilt your head some and line up your 'good' eye with your sights at that point. There are methods to accomplish this with rifles as well. I know I'm digging up an old comment but just wanted to clarify it is possible, even if it's a bit silly and unnecessary here.
