The story says... well... kinda yes and kinda no. But the ambiguity is surely gone by the end of the story (which is a good read).

At this point in the story, she's 15 years old. Usually, by that time day-to-day life has gradually worn away the hymen to the point where actual penetration wouldn't cause a horror movie. But for someone who (as the story goes) is ignorant about her body and this is her first time experimenting, her hymen was probably still in a cherry-popping state. I'd say the story exaggerates it a little, but not unrealistically so.

My point is the description. Except in unusual cases the vaginal opening isn't rendered some tiny thing covered mostly by a hymen, the hymen is pretty small and only encroaches an eighth of an inch or less along the edge, often only the lowest edge.

It's not unreasonable that inexperience would cause a tear but the author and the people responding before seem to feel it's this all encroaching barrier to the passage that must be violently breached, not that this would be the consequences of clumsy sexual inexperience.

tl; dr : hymen usually don't cover very much and tearing one painfully is sexual roughness/inexperience rather than the only thing that can happen.

This is why they used to make doctors check ladies to see if they had one, because if it was that cut and dried different you wouldn't need a professional.

If this were the way it worked, I'd probably have gotten pregnant before high school. Kind of glad it doesn't work that way... my brothers saw me naked a lot when I was little.
