MemberI think it's one of the worst. Buttons have really strange and uncomfortable placement, bumpers work really bad and instead of second analog there's the C-stick which sucks. And D-pad also works terrible.

MemberI'm so fucking glad I'm not the only one who despises that controller.

MemberI think it's 50/50, with one half loving it and other knowing that it's shit.

Blockedand yet we still use that controller to this day. albeit with slightly different shapes depending on the console/company.
just goes to show how good it is/was. now the N64 controller? that thing was just evil.

MemberApparently it was designed to be gripped two ways, using either the D-pad or the analog stick, depending on which controls the game utilized. Good idea in theory, clunky and bizarre in practice. Of course, this is only what I've heard and I can't recall a source, so don't consider me an authority on the subject.
True 3D games at the time were brand-spanking-new, so I wouldn't fault Nintendo for the design if my above statement is fact. I'd never given much thought to the design as a kid, and all the games I had didn't use the D-pad, so it didn't seem strange to grip the center "arm". Only realized how unwieldy it was when I heard other people talking about it, and even then I didn't think it was that big a deal. Two grips for two control schemes.
Playstation and xbox got the layout right (though the first PS controller seems like a huge oversight, 360° of movement is pretty much required for any game with a z-axis), Nintendo figured it out and designed a pretty good controller.
Gotta say my favorite controller is the 360's, though. Gives me the least hand fatigue.
...why did I just type all that, nobody cares

Former StaffI do :3. even though I discovered consoles a bit later in my life than most others, and only have owned a PS3 and PS4 so far, I find the history of the older, and “original” consoles pretty cool.
though I don’t know much about them yet, so please don’t ask me or discuss about them, with me :p.

MemberI think it was great for the GC, but not necessarily optimal for present day. Back in the day, the most commonly used button was A, the next most common was B, and X, Y, and the C-stick were meant to be tapped once in a while. Just look at Twilight Princess and you'll get what I mean.
Nowadays tho, all buttons are used equally and the right stick is used constantly, so it's not as good.
It's still pretty good for Smash tho, since the controls haven't changed since the GC-era.
