Jokes aside, this must've been one of the most useless Pokémon I've ever played with.

    His evolution however...

    Is pretty garbage.

He is unfortunately typed as Water/Flying, which makes for 4x weakness against Electric, a very common offensive type; even if they aren't running an Electric-type themselves, it is easy to use moves like Thunder for coverage.

In newer generations, there are Pokémon that simply have better stats for the niche he covers. I'd rather have say, a Frillish, which is Water/Ghost, with the ability to absorb Electric attacks on switch, than him.

In the older generations (specifically I and II), the stat that improved your damage was based on the type of move. This meant for Water and Fire, it would use your SPECIAL ATTACK rather than Attack, which Gyarados has 125 and 60, respectively. This meant that if you wanted to take advantage of STAB, you'd be working with 60 base, rather than 125. It was just an unfortunate oversight, but in those older games his main role was ... literally broken.

    At least he looks cool?

  • Someone obviously didn't realize that Gyarados can learn Earthquake and outspeeds a huge chunk of electric-types. And that Ground type does a heap of damage to a lot of things, not just Electrics.

It was sort of meh before the phys/spec split (gen 4), but now that it has Ice Fang and Waterfall and Bite...

It has awesome and useful mega evolution!

btw don't post this competetive crap here, it often makes the comment section filled with pointless arguments.

You don't play competitive Pokemon, do you? Gyarados is OU for a reason. Mega Evolve (which removes the dreaded 4x weak to Electic) and Dragon Dance, Earthquake, Waterfall and Crunch is scary. But heck, 4x weak doesn't ruin things either. Ho-Oh is 4x weak to the most commonly used competitive move in the game, Stealth Rock, yet that is still so good it has been banned to the Ubers tier. Rayquaza, also 4x weak to Ice has been banned to that tier as well. Gyarados is strong, end of discussion.
