• Because child posts don't show up on the main post page. That's why the more finished version is supposed to be the parent.

Usually, the first picture in the series is the parent. You have to start from somewhere. You usually don't just take a finished image, make a sketch of it, and label that as the parent. The parent comes first, then the child.

  • Not following your logic here. Real-world facts relevant to the standard use of the word aren't exactly the point. And something that can be described as a series isn't even something that's supposed to use the parent/child post mechanic... Nor do I see what the post date has to do with anything.

  • He's saying that the other one is the parent because it came first. Therefore, the other one gave way to this picture. Parent unto child. Makes obvious sense.

  • But I'm saying what does that have to do with anything? Considering the whole mechanic about child posts being hidden in the main post list... Automatically picking the first one uploaded as the parent guarantees that the rest of the posts will be missed by anyone not specifically looking for them.

Really, my entire opinion is basically summed up in my first post... The parent post is the one which shows up in the cases where only one does, therefore logically the parent post should be the most complete (or 'authentic' in the case of 'shops) image.
