MemberThe adopted kid is a dog but, would dogs even exist in a humanless world?
AlexanderMugetsu
MemberThe creators have stated dogs (and cats) don't exist in the Zootopia universe, since they are neither considered predators or prey.
metatron
MemberThat's a gray fox, not a dog.
Llollt
MemberPretty stupid explanation. They should just have said "because there was nobody to breed them" instead.
Dogs and cats are still predators. Just domesticated predators.
LoboBobo
Member"A box? Or a funny?"
What a funny-looking box.
MisterNightmare696
MemberWell to be honest its a simple explanation for the children. A more adult answer would be what you said, since human kind never existed no one was around to selectively breed various types of dogs and cats so they never existed
tcmeow
Memberhow did this get downvoted? You're totally correct
TelTale
MemberYup, dead on. Without human's selective breeding, the canine that proceeded the dog would still be roaming the world. Modern theory is that dogs actually domesticated themselves (by being less fearful they were able to associate with man and as a result became man's companion. Felines have much the same pattern) So in the Zootopia world there is likely a canine and a small feline that is the predecessor to dogs and cats respectively. They are likely kind, approachable, and less aggressive than the other canines and felines.

MemberIt is a grey fox, the source says so.
Scarlet-Svobodova
MemberIf you wanna be nitpicky about it, lions are large cats, their own category. But anyway we were obviously talking about domesticated cats and dogs. Wolves are wolves, not dogs, dogs are the result of a long series of breeding of wolves, so it's more the other way around. As for cats, I do think there are small, wild cats, but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe Ocelots are as small as we get.
cybercraft
Memberbobcats anyone? lynxs >.> not sure about that one?
FantasiIFrittFall
MemberLooks like a biological child if you ask me :).
Tainted1
MemberSomehow the artists name is extra appropriate for this image.
GameManiac
BlockedThey also wanted to focus on beasts that are obviously herbivorous and carnivorous. They didn't put in fish (which is what the predators in Zootopia eat), birds, or reptiles.
tiamat5
BlockedI hope they change their minds later and show that there are small villages of things like that in the rest of the world. After all Zootopia is just a single city
FantasiIFrittFall
MemberWell that's a shame really. I can easily see how dogs would evolve in an universe like the one Zootopia takes place in. Dogs evolved from wolfs, and as far as I know, there were wolfs present in the movie. If you ask me, that would be a very thin explanation if someone were to tell me why dogs and cats makes no appearence in a movie like Zootopia, but again that's my opinion.
FantasiIFrittFall
MemberActually, even an excuse like that there were no one to breed them is quite thin. Border collies could have evolved from the wolfs thanks to an early peace treaty with their prey formed between a pack of wolfs and a group of sheeps. Tibetan spaniels could have evolved through groups of wolfs living a peaceful life high up in the mountains, similarly to how monks live up in the temples where the said breed of dog originates from. So yeah, dogs could have been easily added into the storyline of Zootopia with the right explanation.
Goldenshadow
MemberOh, oops... lol
AlexanderMugetsu
MemberFrom what I understand, modern dogs came from early wolf domestication from our ancestors. So no humans means no domesticated dog breeds.
Entrinity
MemberWhen will people realize cats were not created by humans! And are obviously predators!!
Kakkarot
BlockedHello? Are you ALL there?
AlexanderMugetsu
MemberMaybe domestication helped create some species.
Every1DrinkBeer
MemberActually, there is very little difference between a tame Felus Catus (house cat) and one of the wild varieties. A wild cat raised from a kitten is quite tamable, and a domesticated cat that was raised in the wild is almost as hard to tame as a wild one. Cats do not naturally lend themselves to the domestication process as well as canids, and the reason we do not have Great Dane sized cats is because if they were any bigger than the ones we already have, they would be too dangerous. Proportionally a cat is much more muscular than a dog, and the bigger they get the more dangerous their claws and teeth are.
AlexanderMugetsu
MemberWell there aren't any seen wild cats that are virtually the same in size and structure to any wild cats in film.
Every1DrinkBeer
MemberExcept for the cat on the cover of Duke Weaselton's bootlegged "Meowana" DVD, which looks like a wild cat.
AlexanderMugetsu
MemberWell that is a wild cat, a predator, so it would make sense.
Si 288
MemberAll dogs are is an intermixing of current canine variants. Humans no doubt put the process in place, but do not forget that animals are able intermix with out human influence.
wackyfox26
MemberI get it fox+bunny= Box or Funny
AlterSage
MemberThank you!
It irritates me when people say that small cats can't exist in Zootopia. I was just about to point this out.
user 71813
MemberThis is really cute. I'm really looking forward to this movie:) I could see this happening.
Dragon Mizu
MemberThe Greyfox's eyes reminds me of Bubsy...
Furrin Gok
MemberThere are plenty of ways that it could have happened even in the Zootopian universe.
For example: Slavery incidents where prey developed the tools (similar to humans) to help them survive and ended up stronger than the predators and enslaved others, then forced them to breed to reduce the level of violence, or other incidents where people wanted super-soldiers and bred them to be more ferocious.
Plenty of years of inter-racial/-species relationships that could have caused the breeds to sprout up without slavery is also possible.
FantasiIFrittFall
MemberWell that sounds like a possibility too. But I like to think about the more peaceful and civilized theories.
TimSpawl
MemberYet there are domesticated pigs XD
AlexanderMugetsu
MemberThey're our prey...
nomigid15
MemberWell, hypothetically something at least resembling selectively bred species could potentially emerge among really insular family lines (like in certain royal families).
