Its probably more that she realizes just how much of a gap she has between her son and herself. The fact he's practically in this massive hurry to write off her existance kinda hurts.

Actually at no point does he ever tell/show/imply to her it will make up for it. He despises his father, and the fact he NEVER stayed means he couldn't stand her either. In fact he even INSULTS her about his father's habit. He even knew from the very start she'd never bother to show her face to him unless she wanted something.

She seemed to miss him and when she softened up, he was fine with meeting her, but as soon as it was over, instead of her having anything nice to say, she goes back to her ego stroking.
