It's called a Butterfree you morons, evolves in like 10 trainer fights. Besides that just don't fight the gym leader right away and come back with something better...

When I first played, I didn't know about Butterfree and ended up using a Pidgey and a ton of Sand-Attacks

squirtle is the best starter, period. in fact water is usually the best in the next 2 generations as well, don't know about the rest since i just gave up on it
