I think his pause is more like an attemt to create the weirdest or craziest excuse, rather than simplest one. Or he is actually going to tell them the truth is some sarcastic, funny way.

Nick: Well you see we both worked an 18 hour shift yesterday and I wasn't fit to drive home safely, so she was kind enough to let me crash on her small sofa she had.
