    How is this flag desecration?

    Because its touching the ground.

Also looks to me more of a towel, with the edges and such

If it's a towel, then it's not really desecration of a flag now is it?

Actually, no, it is. Anything that bears the colors of the American flag that is not the American flag pretty much desecrates the flag. It's part of the flag code.

According to the Flag Code, a flag is anything "by which the average person seeing the same without deliberation may believe the same to represent the flag."

So technically, the towel is a flag according to the code. But the fact that it is on the ground doesn't necessarily count as desecration as I fail to see a deliberate attempt to deface or otherwise harm the 'flag'. What I do see could be a breach of flag etiquette however, since flags should avoid touching the ground.

  • A couple things:

    1. Translation is supposed to be "Happy Birthday, America!" Although I could be off a little.

    2. Ayn is a risque character, so I thought it was amusing to put her on a flag towel. It isn't meant -as- desecration, but I can't really stop it if people see it as such.

It just means I sucked at making it look like a towel.

  • I'm so happy I'm Canadian, and don't have to join the argument. Irregardless of whether this is considered desecration or not, that flag is getting some hot action, so I don't think it minds.

  • If it didn't have Arabic or anything with a Middle Eastern connotation, this wouldn't be considered desecration to some people. Even if they won't admit it, that's the reason why they were lead to see it that way.

And, it's fake arabic. I can see the words "name" (ism) and "light" (nur) in it.

What I got from it, as best as I could read the calligraphy was "جذل اسعق نورامريكا"

Personally, it was hard to read which was a marker for Qaaf/Thaal or if it was sukuun. I chose qaaf for the last character in Asaak because of the shorthand dotting placed above it.

I personally wasn't able to take much meaning from it, other than the word "hilarious/exultation" that was stuck in, which was what I read as "جذل"

I like the art because I think Arabic script is beautiful, as is the girl, but in these times, I don't think it was very apropriate.

That being said, I think more of them should wear Hijab with a light matching face veil would be attractive in many ways, mainly it showcases the expressiveness/beauty of the eyes.

I do look forward to seeing more of your art.

    الحمدلله

  • Yeah it's flag desecration because it's straight-up flag design and it's not being used as a flag. Note that things with stars and stripes are not desecration according to the flag code ("bunting" etc.), but if you have a blue square with 50 stars positioned just so over 13 stripes in just such a configuration, there's no room for error here; it's under the purview of the flag code. Fortunately the flag code is official policy and etiquette, not law, so who cares amirite?

  • HOLY CRAP have you guys taken this SOOO FAR out of context it's unbelievable.

First of all, they make these towels. You can buy them. Google it.
Secondly, in the FA submission, I say very clearly "I am by no means fluent in Arabic, so excuse me if it comes out jarbled, but its supposed to mean 'blahblah etc'"
and Third, the idea was to make a tasteful/cute/sexy combination of Arabia and the Americas. I had hoped that was apparent by her pose, face, and overall image. Because I support harmony between the two, and they both have rich cultures.

If she was like, chewing on it, ripping it up or some shit like that, then yeah it'd be flag desecration. But she's not now is she!

Again, kudos to those of you who aren't taking this seriously. and extra kudos to those of you who can help me with writing Arabic.

  • The only Flag desecration I see here is the pink cloth trying to steal the flag's attention... If the Bikini were removed, there would be no controversy.

well your right however id like to point out that
we do not see the exact number of stars therefore it is likely to not be 50...just incase any one would argue
with what i said about getting a life

Why is it the fact that it has a middle eastern connotation make it desecration? sounds pretty racist if you ask me

    Well...
I am also by no means fluent ("Stay back 100m or you will be shot" and "how much is that water?" being the only two things I can read, speak AND write) but I recognize none of those symbols, which I am taking to assume means it's neither base Arabic nor Farsi.

Yeah, the whole flag thing on the ground tweaked me a bit. But whatever, I serve to support both the people waving the flags and burning them.

My point of contention lies with the whole "blending the cultures" bit. The ME basically has no culture, and hasn't since the early-mid 70's. I know, I've been there. And then went there some more...and some more...and finally went there with a purpose other than shooting/bribing locals...point being I've now spent 7 fucking years split between Iraq and Afghanistan with many months spent hopping around the other countries going to or from Iraq and Afghanistan sightseeing. What culture is there is either extremely slavic (up in the top half of Afghanistan) or extremely westernized (I spent 3 weeks in downtown Dubai without hearing a single syllable of any of the Arabic languages--it was mainly English and German). The "Arabic" culture of legend is dead. What they have now are drug gangs in the cities and poor farmers literally fucking their nieces and livestock between trying to wrangle enough food so their 17 kids don't starve to fucking death out in the country.

Fluff, A for effort man. But do your research or make it look retro in the future. Please.

hmmm i didnt kno we had arabic furries. nice! they must keep it super secret in some areas, lest be burned with acid

I think they'd be more worried about surprise buttsecks than they would stoning, what with the proclivity towards fucking livestock found pretty much everywhere between central China and eastern Spain.

  • When I first saw this I did no think fluff had the intent of being disrespectful. And from what he writes that's correct. However, even with good intents, it's somewhat irritating.

Someone speaking arabic is probably arab. Arab countries don't have a good experience of US foreing policies at all. So you can understand it in two ways, either she is peaking seriously in which case it's quite revisionist (even if he did not mean it), either it's sarcasm in which case, well the "desecrtion" arguments make some sense.

But come on, I cannot understand how a rational person can end up thinking a flag is sacred. That's just ridiculous. And americans will not like this, but historically only facist states have had such attitude toward their national symbols. What can it possibly do to you if a piece of fabrick touches the gound?

If it isn't apparent, some of us Americans can be extremely prideful in our national symbols that hold beliefs that people have died for on foreign soil defending.

If people didn't react like this I still wouldn't be concerned, just find it more thought-provoking.

Regardless, I still see it and like it for the art it is.

I've learned more about flag desecration here than in school...

And this is exactly why you should always double-check your info. In the USA flag desecration has been explicitly legal since 1989 (though it seems like some people are getting awfully close to making it illegal again).

As an aside, there are some countries that don't even allow you to use their flag pattern on anything that isn't a flag (so no flag on t-shirts, purses, nothing). To me it seems like they're actively trying to discourage people from being patriotic xD
