The Soviet Union, officially the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (often shortened to USSR) was a transcontinental Eurasian country that existed between 1922 and 1991. The Soviet Union was nominally a federal union of fifteen constituent countries under a Marxist-Leninist socialist republic - a Communist state - in reality, it was a totalitarian Russia-dominated one-party state governed by a party dictatorship.
