A genie or jinn/al-jinn is a spiritual creature mentioned in early Arabian and later Islamic theology and mythology. The English word derives from the Latin genius and is also used for this kind of guardian spirit from ancient Roman religion.
Genies may be depicted with a flowing or smoky tail binding them to a lamp, bottle or other vessel associated to them, such as with the Genie of Disney's Aladdin. Otherwise, they may be depicted with traits of belly dancers or other Middle Eastern tales, like the half-genie Shantae.
The primary activity of genies is to grant one or more wishes to their "masters" – those who have encountered them, typically by rubbing their vessels. Such wishes often get twisted by the genie at the master's expense, whether by playing on words or plain mischievousness.
