confederate flag
This tag refers to the variety of national, and battle flags attributed with the Confederate States of America.
National flag
This earliest national flag consists of a field of two horizontal red stripes, and one horizontal white stripe, and on the blue canton (upper-left corner) are either 7, 9, 11, or 13 white five-pointed stars. Later versions dropped the stripes and took on traits of the confederate battle flag within a rectangular, or square canton. The flag may contain a single vertical red stripe on the right.
Battle flag
Blue saltire outlined in white on a red field. Inside the saltire are 13 white five-pointed stars.
While this flag is generally perceived as the flag of the Confederacy, it never was their flag, officially or otherwise. It was, however, the battle flag of some Confederate forces, as well as being featured in the canton (upper-left corner) of later flag designs and (in a wider aspect ratio, as seen above) as the Second Confederate Navy Jack.
