hawaiian shirt
A style of men's upper body garment that originated in the state of Hawaii during the early 1900's when Japanese immigrant workers made western style short sleeved, button-up shirts out of kimono fabric. They're decorated with unconventional and garish patterns, and are often loose fitting and made out of silk or rayon as to better suit the climate of Hawaii. Even though prints typically follow themes of flora and fauna, "hawaiian shirt" can refer to any short sleeved shirt with an uncommon print, even subdued ones.
