Markings that are "tribal" in appearance — these can be naturally occuring, tattooed, or painted onto the body. These markings often include abstract swirls, circles, depictions of the sun, arrows, dots, stripes, chains, lines and runes. Characters with tribal markings often wear clothing or are shown in settings with a tribal aesthetic.

While not usually specific to a particular real-world culture, these markings, along with the character's costume, frequently evoke indigenous peoples of the Americas, Africa, Australia, or Polynesia. They can also evoke ancient/pre-modern cultures such as Ancient Egypt, the Inca, Celtic peoples or the Norse.
