Railing refers to the following structures, all of which usually consist of bars of some kind.

• Guard rail, a structure blocking an area from access.
• Handrail, a structure designed to provide mobile support on or near a staircase.
• Safety rail, placed on the edge of high platforms, such as peers and catwalks, to prevent people falling off them. (Star Wars notoriously lacks these. See OSHA violation.)
